Some Truths of Happiness
    People's happiness can be permanently altered. 
For many, long periods of unhappiness are followed by long periods of happiness.


  The most important external factor affecting personal happiness is human relationships.
   
Family or other close relationships, then relationships at work and the community.


  Empathy is in our nature. If a friend suffers an electric shock, it hurts in exactly the same point of the brain as if you yourself suffer an electric shock.

   Doing good is one of the best ways to feel good. People who care more about others are happier than those who care less about others. When people do good, their brain becomes active in the same reward center as where they experience other rewards.

   Giving money away tends to make people happier than spending it on themselves. Being paid can detract from the pleasure of giving. More of those who are not paid decide to give blood.

   8 sessions of mindfulness meditation training raises happiness 20 percentage points one month later and have better immune response than a control group. Training can lead to structural brain changes in the hippocampus, important for learning and memory, as well as in structures involved in self-awareness, compassion and introspection.

   Tests showed individuals with a positive outlook were less likely to get flu when exposed to the virus.

    Our happiness influences people we know and the people they know. The happiness of a close contact increases the chance of being happy by 15%. Happiness of those less close ( 2nd-degree, e.g. friend's spouse) increases it by 10% – or-- happiness of a 3rd-degree contact (e.g. friend of a friend of a friend) increases happiness by 6%.

   Psychology and neuroscience show that the “success” formula is backward: happiness fuels success, not the other way around. With positive attitudes, our brains are more motivated, productive, energetic, creative, resilient, and engaged.

     Positive feelings also affect our long term well-being. Research shows that experiencing positive emotions* leads to a tipping point of greater natural resilience to hardship and heightened ability for achievement. The upbeat outlook is more strongly linked to increased longevity than the link between obesity to reduced longevity. ( in a 3-to-1 ratio to negative emotions).

    Happiness follows a U shape across our life cycles, we’re happier when young and old, less happy in middle age.

  Trust is a major determinant of happiness in a society. People who say "Most people can be trusted" is only 30 per cent of people --U.K. and U.S.-- compared to 60 per cent some 40 years ago. Scandinavian countries are still over 60 per cent and they are the happiest countries.

  The most important internal factor is mental health. For 34 year olds, mental health level at age 26 contributes 4 X more to their present happiness level than income.
 
  
New psychological therapies like cognitive behavioural therapy can transform lives. Within 4 months a half of those with depression or lifelong anxiety return to normality.

   Economic stability has a large effect on happiness in society, yet long-term economic growth has little. Unemployment lowers happiness as much as bereavement, loss of a spouse.

  • Expert views- Science of happiness videos, resources, exercises, mindfulness, helpful, meaningful conversations, kindly listeners and more.
  • Personal views, reflections, personal experience
  • Do you know: fun, often surprising research findings relating to the theme
  • Group discussion: sharing ideas in groups and listening to differing perspectives
  • Action ideas: everybody comes away with an action they hope to take as a result
  • Mini- Meditations, “One- Moment” style

Our Topics include:
  OUR SELVES, SERENITY, HEALTH, RELATING WITH 
OTHERS, WORLD COMMUNITY
         Each topic focus is for 1- 3 weeks as directed by group needs, desires and time available.

Notes: Subjective levels of happiness are well correlated with objective measures of brain activity as well as well with friends' reports and obvious causes (like unemployment) and subsequent behavior (like quitting a job or a marriage)
Current changes: The proportion of U.S. students who think that it is essential or very important to develop a meaningful philosophy of life has fallen from 65% in the 1960s to 45% today. Teen Mental health – emotional or behavioral problems-- is twice as high as in the 1970s.
